Wallpaper Borders That Transform A Room

You can give any room in the home an entirely different look without forking over a lot of money or putting a lot of effort into it. Whether you wish to create a “feel” or produce a theme, borders can transform any room quickly. Wallpaper border is typically sold in pre-pasted sheets or rolls that are fifteen foot long, with widths varying from around six inches to ten inches. Many people implement border as a completing aspect when hanging regular wallpaper, but you can also hang border on its own over painted walls and combine it with metal wall sculpture.

Preparation
It is not that difficult to hang wallpaper border. You will need a measuring tape, a table to work on, a wallpaper roller to smooth out wrinkles (or you can use a wet sponge), and a large tub to put the wallpaper border into in order to activate the adhesive on the back. If you are not using pre-pasted wallpaper border, you will also need wallpaper paste. Pre-pasted wallpaper border is preferred by most people and is particularly ideal if you are hanging the wallpaper border on top of vinyl wallpaper as it gives a superior hold. In general, however, the paste that is already on the pre-pasted border will be strong enough to hold the border to most surfaces. You want to make certain that the wall where the wallpaper border will be placed is cleaned and that it is free from grease, debris and dirt. Fill in any nail holes with wood putty, allow the surface to dry, and sand away any imperfections that might cause a bumpy appearance in the border. In order to permit the wallpaper border to affix properly, the surface must be smooth.

Hanging the Border
Measure the area where the wallpaper border will be placed. Fill your tub with lukewarm water. Cut the length of wallpaper border that is required for the first wall, and then begin to soak it in the tub. As you “feed” the length into the warm water, it will fold up; this is okay – it is wet and slippery and will not stick together permanently. Let the border soak in the warm water for a few minutes before you attempt to place it on the wall. This works to permit the paper to expand a bit and gives the adhesive time enough to be activated. Now, place the border on the wall, and utilize a wet cloth or sponge to smooth away any wrinkles and bubbles. Many people take the soaked border and roll it up in the water after soaking. This can make it easier to manipulate as you work around the top of the room.

Using Wallpaper Border Creatively
The use of border is not simply limited to the top of the room around the ceiling. You can also run wallpaper border around the room’s base, right above the baseboards or around metal wall art hangings. This will give the effect of adding stature to the room by making the top of the room appear more open. You can also use wallpaper border near the center of your wall, just as you would with wainscoting or you can achieve the look of wainscoting by using lighter paint at the top of the wall, darker paint at the bottom, and a wallpaper border in the middle.
