Underground Room Floor Coverings – Building Material Issues

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Developing and fitting out a cellar presents construction challenges because of the main dilemma: normal water. Basements attract moisture and are threatened constantly by leaks simply because of being below ground level. In areas where the mineral water table is higher, a cellar may effectively be especially prone to flooding as well as the effect of normal water, which experts claim will promote fungus growth and unsafe, unhealthy and unsightly conditions.

Some resources must be avoided when building or renovating a basement improvement simply because they are susceptible to attack by h2o. Nothing requirements greater attention than the resources you use to construct the cellar floor mainly because this really is at the deepest and most threatened degree of the whole property.

Basement floors are a focal point for moisture despite the efforts to guard the room. It seems sensible and is finest practice to keep away from utilizing particular components in constructing your basement floor. Wood is an obvious selection for numerous floors, nevertheless even when it’s treated for moisture and normal water resistance and no matter how properly it is maintained, wood will eventually succumb for the adverse effects of normal water.

You should also avoid using carpet or carpeting tile to cover the floor due to the fact once again, carpet will attract and retain normal water and is very easily damaged. It is also a breeding ground for fungus which will create a health hazard too.

Porous or delicate ceramic tile really should be avoided due to the fact this will absorb and retain moisture which will also provide a breeding ground for mildew and mold.

Basement floors obviously need to consider the aesthetics even though combating and preventing harm by water. Concrete floors can supply an efficient mineral water barrier, in particular when treated and sealed as well as carrying anti-fungicidal preservatives to guarantee mildew and mold don’t find a household, nevertheless, bare concrete is hardly a warm, comfort-stirring material to appear at and walk on.

Slate is usually a great material for constructing laminate flooring (and walls) since it’s a fully natural item. It provides color variation between olive green and light brown, having a wide range in texture and granular look such that no two slate tiles are going to be identical. Slate can be totally normal water proof and impermeable, plus it gives no natural habitat or food source for mildew and mold. Also, when it does become wet, slate is really a non-slip surface which adds to the safety factor.

Challenging or non-porous ceramic tile can be suitable for use in cellar flooring. It’s challenging wearing and fairly uncomplicated to install, and provided it really is non-porous, it supplies a good water barrier. Ceramic tile also comes in a extremely broad range of colors and styles because it is man-made and can successfully customize your cellar decorations and style. Ceramic tile does have a disadvantage in that it will grow to be slick and hazardous when wet.

Kitchens That Are Eco Friendly

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

The ecosystem is important to the world’s inhabitants. Awareness is raised everyday to improve the environment. Using substances that cause no harm to the environment and recycling help save the earth. Green kitchens are a great way to show appreciation for your environment.

Using Recycled Materials for the Kitchen

There are numerous ways to design an eco friendly kitchen. New products each day are released to the market that are recyclable and are sustainable.

Recycled glass is used in many kitchen countertops. Recycled glass in kitchen countertops is a chic, modern way to go green in the kitchen. The life of glass countertops may not be very long, but is a great step to take for producing a green kitchen.

Another popular choice for many remodelers is flooring and other furniture made from eco-friendly wood such as bamboo. Bamboo is the darling of the green set because it grows faster than any other wood-based plant life on earth. It is plentiful and sustainable and therefore a popular choice for homeowners. The good news is that because bamboo is becoming so popular, the product choices are increasing, and the price is falling as a result. If bamboo is not your first choice, you should also consider cork or eucalyptus.

Natural Sources for Heat and Light

Find a way to bring more sunlight into your home. Having sunlight in your home shining through a window is passive solar energy. Passive solar energy has the ability to make a room brighter and warmer. This will result in lower fuel bills and helps minimize your consumption of energy produced by fossil fuels.

Dedicate an Area to Recyclable Materials.

An eco-friendly kitchen will promote a healthy green lifestyle. Dedicate an area for recycling. In this designated spot, you can separate glass from paper and plastic, and have it ready for pickup on your scheduled pickup day. Having environmental awareness is a way of life that should be carried out all day, everyday.

When buying products that are intended to be environmentally sound, it’s important to remember that we do this to lessen the impact on our trash sites. When purchasing eco friendly products make sure they are sustainable.

Home Improvement-Painting Tips For Concrete Floors

Friday, August 13th, 2010

Many garages or basement have concrete flooring. The beauty of concrete is that you can easily paint it as compared to other more expensive treatments. You paint your concrete floors not only for aesthetic purposes but also for practical reasons as it makes the floor easier to clean and more durable in the long run. If you paint it correctly, your floor will be able to last for years.

Where to Start:

This is not a very expensive home remodeling project but it is one that is more than an overnight project. First, you have to make sure that your floor is absolutely dry prior to starting your painting project. If you notice wet spots, especially from the basement, it is better to consult a professional first to fix that seepage problem.

Once you have determined that your floor is and will remain completely dry you will need to scrub your concrete to be sure that there is no residue of any chemicals, like grease on the floor. This is important especially if the floor you wish to paint on is your garage or shop area. This is critical because the paint would not be able to cling completely if there are any foreign materials present.

Eliminating that grease off the floor is essential and some kitty litter would be very useful in cleaning some of it. Next step is to scrub the floor with the use of Goof Off and then rinse it after wards. After wards, scrub the floor with the use of some TSP mixture; rinse and repeat several times until the mop looks clean after rinsing. After about three days of drying, the floor is now primed for painting.

Additional prepping necessary prior to painting:

Using a sander or an 80-grit paper, remove any stuck materials on the surface of the floor and smooth out the bumpy portions. A tack clothe would also be helpful in removing some residue from the sanding that the vacuum could miss.

Look for and fix any cracks that might be present. Use Cement Fix-all to plug these cracks or little holes and be sure to let it dry thoroughly.

Now you are finally ready to start painting!

First, you will need two applications of stain blocker and a primer like Kilz. These applications must dry completely in between applications. Now you can apply a top quality latex flat paint. A paint compressor or a roller will work fine for the painting.

Decorating your painted floor:

As a matter of personal preference you may want to make some geometric shapes or use faux stone or whatever you would like. You may let your creative juices flowing at this point, just be sure to let the floor dry thoroughly before finishing.

Best finish for your painted concrete flooring:

Using a quarter-inch nap roller, finish your painted concrete floor with two applications of Breakthrough sealer. To be safe, wear a respirator mask when doing this as fumes are sure to be present during this process. Then, of course, let it dry thoroughly.

Now your new concrete floor is done. You may decorate it with some throw rugs or an area rug for some flourish as it is still concrete after all. Only difference is that you may now proudly claim that it’s already a beautiful concrete!

Home Improvement Projects-Blow-in Insulation

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

It is widely acknowledged that today’s fuel and electricity prices are ridiculously high. Unfortunately, we do need both to either heat up our homes during winter or cool it down during summer. A practical way to save on your energy costs is to insulate your home properly. Insulating your home may be a little expensive initially and it could be bothersome to install, but over time you’ll learn to appreciate that it is quite possibly one of the most important improvements that you can ever undertake for your home. So now you know that you need to have your house insulated, the question is what could be the best type of insulation for your home?

What is the best insulation?

In the older homes it was common for insulation to consist of stuffing the floor boards and the walls with newspapers or even egg cartons. While it may have worked its purpose, un-beknownst to most of them people were actually introducing additional fire hazards into their homes! Fortunately, now there are many available methods for insulating your home. Insulation materials today have something called an R rating.  As you might guess, the higher the R rating goes the more efficiency you have from your insulation.

Aside from the efficiency of the material used, there are also different methods of installing the insulation. In the process of evaluating all the available choices you will discover that the blow-in insulation has one of the highest R ratings.

How is blow-in insulation better than the others?

Instead of using multiple sheets of fiberglass, the blow-in type is more adaptable and has better insulation qualities. Its R rating is entirely dependent upon the amount of insulation you blow in and ranges from fifteen to thirty-eight. This is also a very friendly type of insulation for those people suffering from respiratory problems or allergies.

The insulation material is form-fitting since it is able to stick to the outline of the plane where it is attached as it is basically blown into the walls. There is little to no chance of air seepage as it is fit tightly to the wiring, beams and corners. The installation process is a breeze. The material actually seals surface imperfections as it expands to fill the gap between every crack and crevice.

How is it installed?

Installing the blow-in insulation is very simple. First, you insert the installation tube through a hole located on this material called the blanket. This is attached to the walls or floor where the insulation will be blown. The hose used to blow in the insulation goes into the blanket hole and can be moved in any direction until the insulation is filled in behind the blanket barrier. The blanket is merely to contain the insulation as it is blown in. Once the job is finished, the hole is taped shut.

The new wall material is installed directly over the blanket. If you wish to add some more insulation down the line,it would not be necessary to remove the entire wall material in front of the blanket. You may just make a small opening, have the insulation blown in, close the hole up, and finish with a little paint job. Mission completed.

Even though this type of insulation costs much more to install than rolls of fiberglass, the projected energy savings however will make it possible for you to recover your initial investment within a span of four years.

The workers must have and use welding respirator for their safety during they work. For their safety, it is also recommended for them to use safety respirators so they will feel comfortable and safe during improving or building your home.

Homes For Sale Juegos Trabajo | Kitchen Remodeling – Home Improvement

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

homes for sale It is not unusual to wish for a dream kitchen. But, unfortunately, dream kitchens cost mega dollars. The typical kitchen remodeling project can cost about fifteen thousand dollars. Usually this money can be recovered when you sell your home. However, in today’s depreciated housing market this may be difficult. juegos * Preliminary Considerations

Even before you set out and make arrangements with your contractor on what particular paint they are going to use for your home renovation project, you must first make it a point to identify which set of colors you really like the most. As mentioned earlier, colors were proven to set the moods of people inhabiting a room and you as the homeowner would be more comfortable inside a room with colors that really appeal to your liking. Notice how you would avoid places or areas with walls and interiors painted in colors that do not suit your taste. This same principle applies to your choice of colors for your home remodeling project.

The appeal of a particular color to your taste and preference is more important than trying to match your existing furnishing and décor. You might overlook the fact that you do not like a particular color or shade that an existing décor has because of the limited space that these furnishings occupy. However, translating that particular color into a larger area like the ceilings, floorings or walls, you may end up not liking the color and eventually the room, every subsequent waking moment after the renovation work has been completed. So, avoid this situation by choosing your preferred color right from the beginning. trabajo A fresh coat of paint, staying as far away from neutral colors as you possible can, will be the first “wow” factor. Consider a beautiful, enticing shade of green or blue or even something in the maroon family. Take advantage of the color wheel, remembering the key to using it is that “opposites attract”. Try thinking outside of the box; for example stenciling, a beautiful faux finish or maybe a modern sponge application. Perhaps you would even prefer changing to wallpaper.

Reds are great shades to choose for kitchens as they evoke the appetite and keep people more sociable, lively and wide awake. However, you should consider people in your household who may find their blood pressures rising whenever they are inside an area with a great deal of red. To avoid such scenarios, choose other shades of red like a darker wine of burgundy color. Blue is not a good selection for the dining room or kitchen as it has been tested to suppress people’s appetites.

Laminate countertops are easy to care for and last a very long time. Choose a color complimentary to the finish you chose to clothe your walls with; the color wheel will be an invaluable aid to you in this endeavor.

Therefore, the investigative time you devote to your kitchen improvement project can definitely be correlated to the degree of your satisfaction with the end results that you were able to obtain. No one wants to invest a huge amount of money, time and effort only to be disappointed with the outcome. It is always better to think before you act. You can be published without charge. A Functional Kitchen Can Cut Preparation Time

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

If someone asks you whether your kitchen is functional, you may think that it really is. But is it? While the overall design of the room is extremely important, there are other elements that play a huge role as well. For example, small appliances and the way you use them.

To begin with, invest in a knife block set. Certainly, if you have shopped around, you’ll see that they exist in almost every price range. Of course, some are much better than others. If you can, don’t scrimp on this item.

For example, a Henckels knife set is one. Not only is it backed by a good name, it will provide years of service and will look great on the countertop. That is a very important part as well. Design plays a very big role and be all like things to look right. But more than that, it will help cut down time when it comes to preparing meals because you’ll be able to reach for them very quickly.

Aside from that, you have to bring in very helpful small appliances. They will cut down your meal preparation time and allow you to become a little more experimental with new recipes. That’s because everything will take much less time to prepare when using good-quality small appliances.

Some small appliances are given and should be in every kitchen. For instance, the electric hand mixer. To this day, there are still some people that will manually mix ingredients! Why? Everything can be done in a fraction of the time so why waste time? When you save time, you can treat your family too incredible meals every day. What’s important is that you always have the proper ingredients for the recipe, use tools that will cut down the time and always try to stay organized.

It’s unfortunate that some people just don’t take advantage of the right tools. They think that many of them are just gadgets that are quite unnecessary. Unfortunately, it is quite the contrary. In this day and age, time is something that many of us just don’t have because we are out on the workforce. Other reasons for cutting time required to prepare meals is because we have grown as a society. We no longer are satisfied with the simple things, and we want to be able to spend every moment of our time in ways that we want to, instead of being locked away in the kitchen.

So, it is recommended that you take the time to reassess not only the design of your kitchen, but all of your helpful tools. Dispose of any that aren’t helpful, and by those that are high in quality. Even though they may be more expensive, they will be durable and last a long time, meaning you won’t have to replace them.
