Living Rooms – Tables And Sofas And Carpets
You begin with an empty room, a blank canvas across which you can stretch your decorative imaginings, creating any kind of environment that your mind can conceive of. First, you start with the big things, seating, tables, shelves and cabinets, large furnishings that will become the back bone of the room. Later these pieces will be complimented, decorated, and enhanced using a series of smaller accessories that will give the room character. But first things first, you have to start off with the necessities of the space.
A living room is a good example. In this space, you need places for people to sit. It’s a basic requirement of the functions of the room. Without a place to rest their feet, a room will usually not turn into any kind of a prominent social location. A table can also be added, either a coffee table, which can dominate the center of the room, or smaller side tables where guests can rest a beverage, or a bag, or simply place their hands when reclining.
Carpets are also often part of the initial pieces placed within a room. Since they go under everything else, they will often be the first thing down. Otherwise positioning them can require the moving and rearranging of lots of large scale, heavy items that can be a bit of a pain to deal with.
The way that you position these large scale items will determine not only how the room looks, but also how it feels. Think about seating. If couches are all faced towards one another, it will lead naturally to social interaction between the people in the room. If you choose an alternate route, with everything facing towards an outside focal point, such as a media center, then that is where the attention of the room is going to tend to lie.. You should do your best to envision how the space is supposed to look, then do your best to coordinate the different elements within the room to accomadate the needs of your design.
You are of course always welcome to change the positioning around if you find that a certain arrangement isn’t working for you. The only problem is that the larger the item, the heavier it will be, so you want to think hard, and make certain you know exactly where you want something to go before you move it.
A room is a concerted whole, yet some pieces are more important than others. The larger items that dominate the space will tend to be more prominent and important than smaller decorative items. You should be careful to consider the nature of arrangements and positioning when coordinating the look and feel of the different accessories within the home environment.
