Decorating A Bedroom From A Child’s Eye View
A child learns from the time they are very tiny that their room is their own little retreat. It is only nature that they wish to surround themselves with their cherished possessions and their favorite colors. So if you are wondering if your child is old enough to help you decorate your space, the answer is a resounding, yes.
Younger Children.
Of course, the child’s age should be taken into consideration when they are helping you to decorate their bedroom. However, even the youngest child will be able to offer input on what they would like to see in their room. As you are designing their new room, you may want to make sure that you include ways for them to help you decorate. A really fun project to do with young children is to create a handprint wall. It offers everything a child needs to have fun while doing a project: Bright colors, simple instructions, and it is a sticky mess! This project is a lot like finger painting, so make sure to protect the floor and wear old clothes. Pick out some bold colors, even their favorite colors and pour them into several disposable pie tins. Then merely have your child dip his or her hand in the paint and then make a handprint upon the chosen wall. You can mix colors and in literally minutes, your child will get to see their brightly colored finished creation.
Older Kids.
When your child is a bit more grown up, they can help you to a greater extent with their room facelift. They will not only assist you with shopping, but they can likewise learn to stick to a budget and help plan the design of their room. They can compare prices on paint, furniture and decor, and come up with a shopping list. As your child goes through this process, they are learning to budget and plan a project’s cash flow. Encourage them to look for pictures of rooms that they like, and have them build a notebook of ideas. The evolution of critical thinking and organizational skills will be furthered by this project. Thus when your older child assists with the makeover of their bedroom they are actually learning some valuable life skills.
Self-Sufficiency.
As your child selects colors and furniture that they want to have in their room, or as they help you decorate their room, they will begin to appreciate art and being creative. As they discover that they can recreate things that they see in a magazine by using the magazine picture for inspiration, they will begin to understand how to create their own space. Simple projects for a young child like making their own throw pillows or building their own bookshelves help foster a sense of independence and self sufficiency in your child that will travel with them throughout their life. When it comes time to decorate their first home, they will have already honed some of the skills that they need for the task.
