Making Beeswax Candle Tips – Candles with the Kids

The warm illuminating glow it emits. That deliciously fragrant smell as your candle fades. Sigh! Many are surprised at how enjoyable producing beeswax candles could be!

The art of beeswax candlemaking is a wonderful DIY project for your children. In this activity, the younger ones will have nothing to do at all a burning stove or even scorchingly-hot wax. You won’t need to worry about obtaining the necessary materials or long hours of cleaning up with a beeswax candle making project.

Making Beeswax Candles Tips - Items that You Do Need

  • 8 inch by 16 inch sheets of beeswax
  • Primed wick sliced for a one inch candle
  • A small paring knife from your kitchen
  • Flat open surface

How to Create Beeswax Candles

  1. Lay out your sheet of beeswax
  2. Slice wick approximately 3/4 inches longer than wax sheet (allowing excess on both sides of candle)

Leaving available wick at each ends allows you the choice to decide which side of the candle you prefer as the top and which side the bottom.

Lay the wick on the tip of the sheet and then, after folding it on top of 1/8 of an inch of wax, proceed with rolling. This seam will enclose the wick securely.  Pushing firmly from left to right continue to roll the beeswax forward around the wick with your fingertips, making sure the beeswax is wrapped tight and straight as you go. This is arguably the hardest part in the entire process of beeswax candlemaking.

Another option would be flipping the wax then folding it down to form a seam—about 1/8 inches—with a counter corner or perhaps a cutting board. Whether you go with the first or the latter, do be sure your efforts produce a textbook-quality seam.

As you make your candle, at some point in time you must decide how thick of a candle you desire. You’ll have to add more beeswax if you want a thicker candle. This is done by aligning the new wax sheet edge to edge with the original & using your thumb to meld the pieces together. Rolling beeswax into a straight line can be tricky so make sure you only stop when it’s wrapped around itself completely.

When you reach the end of the wax, use your thumbs to gently press its edges.  Continue going along the whole length of the candle creating an invisible seam.

Pick out what would serve as the best candle top then cut the wick half an inch over the wax. Don’t forget to remove the remaining wick from the bottom.

Your children might be too young to recognize the little pleasures in this craft project but you no doubt do. So go ahead, ceremoniously light your glorious achievement, inhale the exotic perfume and enjoy this splendid moment! And as for the kids? The end result — candles that your kids can proudly call their own!

The art of making candles is ancient and the things you’re about to do are practically the same things parents in the old days did. Initially, having light was the primary goal…a critical requirement in those instances. But at present, a lot of people simply take up candlemaking for recreational purposes. There could be a number of other reasons for it. As stated previously, most of the time, it is for self gratification. Sometimes however, it is for giving as a gift on special occasions. One of the most popular craft projects that parents teach to their kids is wax candle making. Lastly, there’s the money-making potential to consider. There are also people who make candles for a living.

How to Make Candles – Simple Steps for the Beginner

As the art of making candles has been around for over a millenium, don’t be surprised if it last for a couple more. What was once a night time requisite in order to be able to see is now something people want for pleasure and to create pure enjoyment.

Learning Wax Candle Making is something that is being passed down from parent to child with each new generation. They aren’t only quick to make but working on this project will also be a feat to be proud of. To think you have just molded something from nothing with your own hands!

Your local craft store will be able to furnish all the items needed to make wax candles. Primary materials needed for the project are molds, wicks, and naturally, beeswax. The other requirements are ordinary household items.

With the ever growing popularity of candle making, craft suppliers now carry many accessories to enhance candle making. For example, attractive colors, wonderful fragrances & interesting decorations.

Take the first step by getting your wax ready. This is done by using a double boiler for melting the wax. When wax is totally melted, put your wick in place and pour the wax in the prepared mold.

You should allow up to 6 hours for cooling before removing your candle from the mold. Place the mold in the freezer for 1/2 hour and the candle will release easier from the mold. You may also try spraying the mold with non-stick cooking oil.

On the other hand, special liquid latex has been used by a few enterprising individuals as an alternative for creating molds for candles.

A good number of people have earned money from home by creating their own candles. These entrepreneurs have capitalized on their hobby by turning it into a fulfilling, lucrative venture. Even part-time it is a skillful way to make extra income.

All of this can be done by finding a supplier who sells the necessary craft items and buying in bulk at money saving discount prices.

Packaging products attractively is something that they should consider putting extra time and energy into as eye-pleasing wrapping sells.

The key to creating a successful candle business is personal commitment…just like with any business. A creative side, the willingness to work hard, and motivation.

While learning Making Candles at Home is an old tradition it can often be used to establish a new business!

Dramatic And Striking Southwestern Bedding Sets

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

The informality of southwestern bedding makes it an excellent choice for guest rooms and children’s rooms. Many students take their bedding with them when they leave home for the first time because it provides the much needed comforts of home when they are sleeping in a strange place.

This type of bedding is found in many different styles and designs. The commonality of the bedding is its color. It is normally found utilizing rich earthen tones with black or dark red as an accent. The traditional bedding gives one the distinct feeling that they are in the old west. The blankets are usually an open weave and are made using a traditional yarn fiber.

Modern bedding is made to emulate the traditional design and style of the southwestern style bedding. It is often made using a tight weave fabric that is dyed to give the illusion of a more open weave. The styles and designs are traditional and often the bedding will have a primitive geometric design on the coverlet and pillows that form a pattern when they are placed together.

In children’s rooms the bedding holds up to rigorous use and retains it’s color and shape even with numerous washings. The coverlet is reinforced with thread that surpasses that found on most types of bedding. An individual will find the the colors retain their vibrancy for several years.

The bedding is normally not made in the traditional quilting of most manufactured bedding. There is a thinner layer of batting used in the coverlet that provides the same level of warmth in a more lightweight cover. In areas where there is severe cold, the bedding is often made in a flannel or warmer fabric that provides an extra level of comfort to the user.

Historically, the traditional bedding had meaning. Each design that was woven in the fabric was part of a story. When the bedding was complete a story unfolded that could be shared at night by a family. Now, the bedding is not purposely designed to tell a story, but it can. The designs and figures found in the bedding provides the perfect way to share information, stories, and talk in a comfortable environment.

In many cases you will find that this bedding has been pre-treated and is stain and wear resistant. The manufacturers and designers have created this type of bedding for multiple uses and for function. Many people take their bedding camping and on trips because it provides warmth, is lightweight, and reminds them of home.

The bedding is often used for multiple purposes. For the most part, this bedding provides informal comfort to family and visitors. A person will find that the bedding is extremely durable and will provide guests with the warmth and comfort that you want them to have.

There are several types of southwestern design bedding . You will want to select the bedding set that is best suited for the purpose you have in mind. If you will be using the bedding on a daily basis you will want to get a heavy duty bedding that will retain its vibrancy for several years. If the bedding will be used occasionally for short term use, you may want to select a bedding that is more artful and delicate.

You Can't refuse Oriental Rugs For Elegance

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Oriental rugs will add timeless beauty to your home, will coordinate with any door, and enhance any room, hallway, or entrance. They are also a favorite option when decorating home offices, and are a particularly good choice for high traffic areas because of the intricacies of their designs, which hide wear and tear.  The term "oriental" refers to rugs produced on the continent of Asia, such as Persian (from Iran), Indian, Chinese, and Turkish rugs.  Imitations of the popular oriental patterns are also available and produced by manufacturers such as Nourison in the USA, and Sphinx, also in the USA but with its parent company in Egypt.

Making rugs by hand is an ancient art and the old designs reflect the religious and ethnic structures of the times in the countries or areas of origin.  Many of these ancient designs are still produced today, sometimes hand-woven and hand-knotted, other times woven by machine.  The most traditional patterns are those with a floral or garden motif, or geometric or curvilinear designs around a central medallion or a central painting-like scene.  Oriental rugs used to be constructed only with such natural fibers as wool, cotton, silk, or goat and camel hair, or blends of these materials, but now you can find them made with less expensive synthetic materials such as olefin (polypropylene), nylon, polyester, and acrylic.  Wool rugs remain the first choice in durable, soft, dirt-and-fire resistant, warm rugs, but synthetic reproductions make oriental area rugs more affordable.  They come in a variety of colors, sizes, and shapes ?round, oval, rectangular, and, of course, the popular runner.

Decide on how you are going to use each area rug.  Is it going to define furniture groupings or unify all the elements in the room?  Is its primary use to protect a floor or a carpet?  Is its prime function to add warmth and comfort?  The use of the rug will dictate its size and shape. Constructing a Room with a View and No Windows

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

For some homeowners the view from the window is as important as the decor in the room. While you may have found a home in a great location, there is just one problem. A view, that is what it is missing. Even with windows, if they are small or obstructed by something ugly, you can begin to get a notion of being cut off from the world. A look out on the world outside makes any room feel larger and more open. There are ways that you can counter the effects of having no view in a room. With the right {contemporary wall candle sconces} and {large wall hanging} for your wall, you will hardly notice that blinking neon sign lurking outside.

Mirrors Can Open Up a Space
For windowless rooms or spaces that have no natural light, wall mirrors can turn out to be very helpful. Since mirrors reflect everything that is across from them, they are really handy to use to add another dimension to your walls. You can make an unique, framed window display without much effort by simply hanging two pairs of framed wall mirrors that are the same style and size. By joining together the sides and then ends, you can allow the appearance of four individual windows on your wall. You can become even more creative by including window hardware to the display, as well as a hanging rod and window treatment, or just by hanging a fabric valance along the top. To strengthen the effect, create another grouping of mirrors for the opposite wall. The mirror displays will reflect light back and forth on each other lightening the room and making it feel big and open. As a matter of fact, if you do not point out that you are missing windows in the space it is very likely that no one will notice. The same illusion can be built with hexagonal mirrors, though you may wish skip the window dressing on these more interesting shaped mirror 'windows'. Many small bathrooms do not have windows and the perfect venue for this type of mirror treatment.

Metal Wall Hangings Incorporate the Dimension of Light to the Walls
Metal wall hangings can also work to add to the illusion of light and thus, space, and this is particularly true of {art wall plaques} that are embellished with mirrors. Using a metal wall art hanging, you can fashion mirrors to construct ever changing art on your wall. By using wall sculptures, artwork with mirrors and shiny finishes in wall hangings, you can bring an easy, open feeling to even a very closed in room.

Acrylic Art Creates a View
Adding a beautiful painting of ocean waves to your wall is a wonderful way to add a view to a space with no windows. Scenic works of wall art can range from snowy mountain scenes to busy beach scenes and all options in between. There are numerous paintings available that you can use in your room without a window to make it feel more open and light and give it a great view.

Wall Murals Can Also Imitate Nature
If you have a little room with no windows, you can create a little perspective on the wall with a mural and make your room feel larger. When you are drawing your mural design, you can make it as large or as small as you wish, and it will help to open up your space. In fact, there are so many wall murals for the consumer to pick from, you are encumbered really by your own imagination. If you have a bit of an artistic flair, then picking a wall and a painting your very own mural is a great way to inject a little of your own personality to a room.

Simple Ways to Decorate With a Floral Pattern

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Although it can be intimidating, you can decorate your home with a floral pattern with fabulous results. If you’re just not sure about using floral patterns, you can always begin by using a subtle one. But you can also go all out with a bolder floral pattern that will really attract some attention. Here are some tips to get you started decorating with a floral pattern in your home.

Use the Floral Pattern to Construct the Color Scheme for the Room
You have an instant color scheme for the room when you use a floral pattern to decorate with. You can coordinate the color of the walls with the background color of the floral pattern. If your floral print is on the bolder side, use one of the accent colors in the print for the wall color instead. When you use a floral pattern to decorate a room, you end up with a variety of color schemes right in front of you that you can choose from. Simply play around with the colors a bit and see what you can come up with.

Balance the Floral Pattern with Plain-Colored Items
When you use a floral pattern in your décor, it’s important to be sure that you balance out the pattern in the room. If you have a sofa with a floral print, for example, then add plain-colored pillows to it to balance the print out. Strive to achieve a balance that works both for the room and also for your taste. For some people, small touches of the print in the room is enough, whereas others may find that they want to use the print more. Remember that less is more, particularly if you are working with a bold floral pattern.

Mix the Floral Print with Other Patterns
Floral prints can be mixed with other patterns in a room, despite what you might think. You just want to be sure that the colors are in the same shades and they accent each other. For example, in a country-style room, you can pair a floral pattern with a plaid or gingham print. You might even pair something floral with stripes. So when it comes to prints in your home, don’t feel that you have to be limited to flowers. But do be sure that the prints work well together and contribute to the style of the décor.

Artwork Is an Easy Way to Add a Floral Pattern to a Room
You can easily add a floral pattern to any room by simply hanging artwork up on the walls. You can decorate a large empty wall with a collection of flower portraits or pictures. Or choose just one large floral piece to create a focal point for the wall. When framing the artwork, choose frames and mats that correspond with the style you are going for in the rest of the room.

Incorporating floral patterns into your décor doesn’t have to be complicated or hard to do. You can have a wonderful, bright room that’s in full bloom by remembering these tips and using your creativity.

Things To Look For When You Plan To Rent A Home

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Finding a home to rent can be a challenge to say the least. It can be even more of a challenge if you go at it in a haphazard manner. You need to make sure of a few things before you pay that deposit and move into any place.

The first step you have to take when looking for landed property is to figure out your price range. If you are trying to stick to a certain amount, then you need to look for those properties that are in that range. If you are lucky enough to not have a particular price range, then your search range is broadened widely.

One of the greatest parts of looking for a place to rent as your home is finding one that is going to have enough room for all your things and for your family, too. You should make sure that the home you are going to make a final decision about is going to meet the necessary home storage solutions you are going to need.

One thing to look for if you have a lot of items to store is an outdoor storage building. This is going to help a lot in keeping things you don’t use everyday in a safe place. You will also have a place to put your lawnmower and weed cutter for the yard work in the summer. You won’t have to worry about those big toys for the kids being scattered all over the yard, either.

Sometimes moving into a new house poses the opportunity for a new and positive change for you. You can add to this kind of change by adding some new things to your household. You could get a new set of pots and pans for your kitchen. Why not add in some dishes as well? You could get a new dish drainer and waste can that match. Whatever you may like, big or small, look for things that add a personal touch to your new home.

Looking for the right home decor accents for your new house is going to be a great time. You can choose from wall hangings, dishes, pottery, or even a new trash can for your kitchen. Look for the things that are going to add your personal style to your new home .

Make sure to cover the bases when it comes to pets, deposits, application fees, and certain rules in a lease agreement. You don’t want to move in and have to face a problem with your living preferences with your new landlord.

Fireplace accessories could make using your fireplace a pleasure rather than a job

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Lots of people see fireplaces as just another thing which will require regular maintenance. As a matter of fact, to keep a fireplace in good condition doesn’t need much time, and is not expensive. When you compare the money you avoid spending on heating bills when you frequently use your fireplace, you’ll understand its cost-effectiveness.

The most important step in fireplace care is keeping the pipe and fireplace clean and open. Chimneys should be cleaned at least once a year; and should be handled by a trained chimney sweep. Though, if you have the correct tools, you can clean the chimney yourself. You can discover many wood burning fireplace accessories plus tools on the internet to help keep the fireplace clean. While selecting a quality set of fireplace tools, make certain that the set includes a small scoop and brush so that you can scoop the ashes from the fireplace. Lots of people put their ashes in a paper bag for disposal, but prior to doing so, ensure that the ashes are dead out before placing them inside to preclude a fire. Because of that danger, I prefer obtaining a metal ash bucket or coal carrier to take away the ashes. I frequently purchase these tools at online discount fireplace accessories stores and have been very happy with the service.

To maintain a a trouble free home, you must keep the fireplace dust free. Clogged or blocked flues and chimneys could cause smoke and CO to back up into your residence. This could be more than just an annoyance, it can also be a health issue. Aside from that, soot and creosote deposits could build up inside your chimney which could lead to chimney fires, which are extremely difficult to put out and can cause expensive damage to your home.

Creosote is a yellowish to black oil, that is deposited on the sides of your chimney as a side-effect of ordinary wood burning. Creosote is extremely flammable and can burn at temperatures up to 3,000° F. If a creosote blaze ignites within your chimney, you need to notify the fire department at once. You will not be able to put out the fire yourself.

Creosote deposits build up over{ a period of} time so using your fireplace a couple of times will not cause enough of a deposit to put you in danger. However, taking into consideration an entire year of use, it’s strongly suggested to get your chimney professionally cleaned. Between cleanings, you could acquire bottles of creosote remover, that will help remove creosote deposits from inside the fireplace itself. Creosote is an exceedingly sticky substance which calls for a special cleaner to remove it.

Chimney sweeps usually scour only your chimney, so by keeping a quantity of creosote remover on hand should be of use in maintaining the fireplace system. Creosote can also build up on other things, including the glass doors inside the fireplace and andirons. With a bottle of creosote remover, you can quickly and easily clean these items.
