Home Christmas Decor Adds A Touch of Cheer

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Christmas is always a time of shopping, gift wrapping and baking and adding to an already busy schedule is decorating your home with Christmas decor. Christmas is just not the same without lights and pretty decorations. There are many things you can do and items you can use to dress up your home for this wonderful season. If you have chosen a particular theme for your Christmas decorating, be sure to use ribbon in the color that correctly corresponds with it. You can tie ribbons to all sorts of items in your home such as chair backs, wreathes, basket handles, stair railings and even doorknobs. Both ribbons and bows have a festive look and if you are cautious with them, you can use them over and over again.

Remember to use festive tableware, as it is one of the many Christmas home decorating ideas. Be it a plate, glass or mug, any kind of tableware adorned with a Christmas theme looks festive. Be sure to utilize these pieces at each meal time setting all throughout the season of Christmas. Another good idea is to buy a few pieces each year and in time you’ll have enough tableware to suit your needs.

Festive Home Decorating

Lighting is important when decorating your home for Christmas so turn off your lights and make use of your candles in every room of your home. Place candles on the dining table, on the coffee tables in the living room and perhaps place a nice scented pillar candle in the bathroom. Do not just place them for decoration alone, but be sure to light them every night. If you live in a cold country and you have a fireplace, make sure to light it and enjoy it. For a nice and cozy place for guest to gather, look to a fireplace to set the right atmosphere.

Home decorating for Christmas is not without a Christmas tree. After decorating the tree with your homemade ornaments and strung popcorn, use the leftover branches to make arrangements for your home by putting the greens in a basket or bowl, add pinecones, bows and ornaments. Use the branches to make swags to hang over doors throughout your home. Just stategically arrange the evergreen sprigs throughout your home, including draped over windowsills, shelves and ledges. Evergreen branches and sprigs certainly reflect Christmas and not only do they look nice but they spread a lovely aroma throughout the home.

Christmas is a time for celebrating so it’s a time to pull out all the stops. A good place to look if you are trying to save some money at this time of year is to find your Christmas home decor online. Snow is always a nice touch for Christmas so when decorating your home, why not use artificial snow to add a sparkle to your home. Sprinkle it all over the hutch, fireplace, or dining table. Place ornaments that reflect light throughout your home such as on doors or placed on indoor trees and other plants. This will definitely look dazzling at night as the candle light flickers off the ornaments. Decorating your home for Christmas shouldn’t be a dreadful task but a delightful experience, so keep it simple because simplicity is elegant and beautiful.

Different Ways of Taking Care and Disposal of Your Christmas Trees

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Since you placed so much time in picking out the perfect Christmas tree, it’s only expected that you devote proper time and effort in taking care of it. If you don’t, you’ll soon discover that your tree’s needles could turn brown or yellow; sometimes branches will fall off and break even before the seasons over. Another concern would be your safety. There is no bigger fire hazard than a big drying Christmas tree.

After selecting a Christmas tree and getting it home, the first thing that should be done is to make a fresh cut and place it into a stand with water. A Christmas tree shouldn’t be mounted dry and the water in its stand should be replenished regularly. A fresh cut is made by cutting about an inch off the bottom in a slight diagonal shape to help the absorption of water. If a fresh cut isn’t going to be made immediately after getting the tree home, it should be placed in a container with water and left to stand in a shaded area that is away from the wind.

If you do not make a first cut and you leave the Christmas tree exposed to the air, you could have trouble with it since the vessels for transporting water can close up. You can correct this problem by making another cut and then submerging that part of the tree into water right away.

Your Christmas tree should be secure in its stand and it should be placed away from open flames or sources of heat such as furnaces, fireplaces and air vents, all of which may dry it out. Decoration of the tree should also begin after it has been mounted in its stand. Several decoration precautions should be taken to lessen or avoid the Christmas tree being a fire hazard.

Ornaments that have an open flame or candles should never be used for decoration. Christmas tree lights should be checked to make sure the bulbs are working properly, the connections are intact and that no part of the cord is damaged. If there appears to be any exposed wiring or bulbs that are not working or which are working intermittently, that string of Christmas tree lights shouldn’t be used.

Although the Christmas Tree is the Star of the house during these holidays, it will not hurt to add some Christmas garlands by the stairs or windows , to further enhance the feel of the season.

A good Christmas tree stand should be selected since water is the most important item to getting the longest life out of your Christmas tree. In selecting a stand, find out the amount of water it can hold when a tree is placed in it. Some water will be displaced from the space taken up by the base of the tree so it is important that a selection is not made based on the total volume of water the stand can hold.

According to the National Christmas Tree Association, the average Christmas tree may absorb up to one gallon of water each day. It is therefore important to check the water everyday and replenish it accordingly. To make sure your Christmas tree gets enough water, the Association recommends that one quart of water is required for each inch of the diameter of the tree’s trunk.

After Christmas is over and your wonderfully decorated Christmas tree has provided much joy, it is important to remove it before it dries out. Options to discard your Christmas will likely depend on the services offered by your municipality.

Some communities specify a pick up date for the tree, while for others; it’s the resident’s responsibility to bring the tree to a specific location. There are still others that simply throw their trees along with their trash. One thing to remember though is to not burn the tree in the fireplace since burning them would cause the formation of creosote, which is an oily, colorless substance.

Another option for you, if you want to be environmentally friendly, is to have your Christmas tree cut up and turning it into mulch.

Polished Stones for Home Building

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

When it comes to home building or renovations, we particularly spend time to make both the interiors and exteriors of the homes as attractive as possible. Having an appealing home both inside and out, can give a look at the tastes of the homeowners; hence, having a well-laid design is imperative.

Among the things that passers-by will first notice about our homes is just how sparkly it looks; as often noticeable in our floorings in major parts of the house ans also kitchen countertops and bathroom counters.

A polished look makes any home look more appealing and cleaner, too.

USING POLISHED STONES

Polished stones are often utilized in floors both in homes and commercial structures. They are more attractive than regular paving and most people find them more cost-efficient than other pavers available.

Whether we are in the process of building our homes or remodeling them, choosing to utilize polished stones will certainly work as they add to the overall impression that our homes create.

Nothing is more appealing than having polished stones installed whose glossy quality provide a reflective feature.

There are several other applications for polished stones other than floors and counters. These can also be used for fireplaces and jewelry!

There are plenty of types for polished stones that we may use to complement the lay-out theme of our homes. These types of stones include granite, marble and limestone. They come in different finishes so it will be easy for us to figure out which one will best fit our interiors and exteriors.

KEEPING POLISHED STONES

While polished stones can increase the aesthetic value of our homes, they could be harder to keep than the usual floor pavers. It is best that we use a special type of sealant to lock in the polished quality of our stone paving.

Having the quality of absorbing liquid easily, the shade of polished stones may become dull and marked with stains if they are often come into contact with any kind of liquid. It is hence important that we clean spills the minute they occur.

Cabinet Refacing Ideas

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Before you go looking for a kitchen contractor just read through this very informative write-up. My intention here is to discuss some pretty important issues and provide you with something to think about as you make plan to redo your kitchen.

There are some many websites that claim to provide articles that are all about kitchen cabinet refacing but by taking a bit of each will lead you to mess up everything. Let me quickly walk you through the following key points.

What is Kitchen cabinet refacing?

This is when kitchen cabinets that are aged are revamped by adding a new coating such as veneer, thermo-foil or laminate. In most cases you may have to replace only the doors and drawer fronts.  Ideally the process is easier and faster than a complete kitchen remodel.

In fact is can be as far less as 60% when comparing with the cost of buying new cabinets. So in essence, it is the most efficient, affordable and hassle-free way to boost your kitchen’s look and feel.

Below I review some of the most common coating material used today

Laminate

This is basically a plastic film material but you can also get some made from thin sheet resins e.g. that made from polyethylene. One thing about it is that it is cheapbut it is not as strong when it comes to wear and tear. However, it works well in heat oil resistance and can seal heat perfectly.

Thermo-Foil

If you are looking for something close to wood and new in the market then this should be your best choice.  Sometimes referred to as Vinyl or RTF it has a thick vinyl film that is bonded permanently to a warp-resistant engineered wood core.

Wood veneer

This is a thin slice of wood that is cut from a log with a slicing, peeling, or sawing machine. If you are looking for a nice grain then this is the right material to consider. There are different forms of this type material. The best thing to do it talk to an expert who can help you with all the available options.

Chandelier Lighting Fixtures Provides Elegance In Any Home

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

The correct lighting in a room can make all the difference to the atmosphere and you can change the feel of a room by choosing chandelier lighting fixtures. Chandeliers are very beautiful and you can enhance your room very simply, by installing anyone of the choices available. They come in many different sizes and styles to meet your lighting needs. Chandelier lighting fixtures are very aesthetic, but also very functional and will provide the perfect lighting you need for your room.

One of the many benefits of chandelier lighting, is that you are able to use a dimmer control for how much lighting you want in your room. You may want to dim the lights for when you are out, so as not to totally leave your home in the dark. Planning a quiet evening in front of the fire, is also made special with romantic lighting. You are able to have full lighting, medium or low, just by adjusting the controls on your chandelier lighting system.

These types of switches are either a dial that you turn, or a mechanism that moves up and down the length of the bracket. Whatever your choice, the amount of lighting is controlled by you.

What To Consider

The choice of a chandelier is very personal and you need to consider two main points before purchasing one.

  • Your lighting style – Modern or antique
  • Pricing – Chandeliers can be expensive

Now that you have chosen your lighting style and considered your price budget, it is now time to find your chandelier lighting fixtures. Nova Lighting Store has an excellent range with hundreds to choose from. Some people are looking for something antique in design, while others want to go with something more modern, they have them all. Assess the size of your room, the furniture, ceiling height and overall appearance and decide what style of chandelier would blend and enhance your room.

Chandeliers range in price from a couple of hundred dollars to over a thousand dollars. The more expensive models are often found in hotels and ballrooms, and very opulent homes.

The chandelier lighting that your purchase needs to work well for you. Before you make your choice read reviews about what other people have to say about their lighting or the lighting stores that supply them, such as a Nova Lighting Store Review. Lighting is not something you purchase every day, so select a chandelier that you will enjoy for a long time. You want to get something that will offer you the amount of lighting you really need.

Tile Adhesives And Why They Need To Meet British Standards

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Every CE marking depicts that a product is safe for use as required by the European Union Certification. To be fit for purpose, tile adhesives have to reach the safety standards at stated by the British Standards.

Like all construction material such as tiles, bricks etc adhesives need to pass the safety test in order to be used in Europe. This can include adhesives for tiles, plastic water pipes, gypsum blocks, metallic components and timber. Tile adhesives need to pass the test to conform by the BS EN 12004 as a minimum requirement. The properties are more descriptive in the new British Standard in comparison to those in the British Standard BS 5980. The classification separates the different kinds of adhesives according to their dispersion, performance and reactions to a series of tests.

The newly introduced tests are far more detailed as to what were carried out earlier for meeting safety standards. There are many factors to be considered on whether a product is safe to use or not; the following have been included in the newly formed safety tests – the ability to withstand warpness, water resistance, the ability to stretch and slipperiness. It is a requirement of manufacturers to declare that the proudct meets the basics of these outlined characteristics in order to prove the adhesive meets British Standards. A manufacturer will confirm that it is safe for use by marking the product under a certain catergory.

The BS EN 12004 dk. To be sold in the European Union markets, products that have the CE marking are classed has being fit to use according to the general stardards. They are however, not classed as having full safety to use according to the new British Standard. Heat ageing, freezing and thawing tests all have to be passed before an adhesive can be considered fit for BS EN 12004 standards. However they could pass the CE certification that does not include these tests to pass the Construction Products Directive for the durability of the product.

Before you buy any product it is advisable to check the markings. Products should hold both the CE and the BS EN 12004 certification. Ensure you check thoroughly before purchasing to ensure this. Even if you find both the markings on the label go through the contents to ensure that the adhesive meets the heat ageing and freeze/thaw requirements. The adhesive will show signs if it contains this property, such as a no performance determined NPD sign. It may also have a N/mm2 value which is lower than 0.Durability is measured with 5N/mm2.

The CE and the BS EN 12004 marks are classification ratings that are set by the manufacturer to show the product you are buying passes all safety norms.

With these kind of checks in place the public can rest assured whether decorating the bathroom, with those gorgeous ceramic bathroom tiles or choosing a tile design for your kitchen, each product has had to pass the safety checks in place.

Are Glazed Tiles Better Than Dull-Finish Tiles?

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Tiles are available in both glazed as well as unglazed finishes with each having its own different properties. The best option to consider when tiling walls and floors are glazed tiles; they are by far the most suitable.

Baked in a high temperature kiln, the glazed tiles which are commonly referred to as machine-made tiles, are given a strong density of hardness and colour. It is imperative, since clay is porous in nature, that you add a glaze coating to it for additional reliability. They are available in a wide range of tones, designs and colours and are far more stain resistant as compared to unglazed tiles. Due to the glossy finish and the durable quality, glazed tiles are recommended for wall applications and countertops, e.g decorating bathrooms.

Ceramic as well as Porcelain tiles can be found with a glazed finish that adds lustre and durability to the tiles. Most of the glazed ceramic tiles available in the market have a high density that allows very little and in some cases no accrual of moisture. Porcelain and Ceramic tiles are very similar apart from the fact that Porcelain is said to be more durable and is most likely to last longer. They are better because they have been baked in a kiln at a very high temperature and have been made out of a better quality of clay. They are more resistant to moisture and stains and therefore suitable for both wall and floor tiling and can withstand high traffic. Ceramic bathroom tiles are still available however and are fit for purpose.

Today glazed flooring tiles have become quite popular and are the most purchased tile type. Glazed tiles are used for bathroom designs and kitchen wall and floor tiling because of their ability to work well in wet conditions. They are produced in various countries like Spain, United States, Italy and Portugal to name a few. The quality of the tiles is generally rated according to their durability. The Porcelain Enamel Institute grading system is usually used to test this. Their ability to withstand abrasions and other external conditions is included in this. This rating is measured on a scale of 0 to 5 wherein tiles falling in the 0 category are less likely to withstand force as compared to those in class 5, which are considered the best quality of tiles.

Tiles in category 5 are most suitable for heavy traffic areas that are prone to dirt and heavy abrasions. You will find areas that have a constant flow of traffic, such as subways, shopping malls, industrial floors, airports are the best areas to visit. Just like any other tiles, glazed tiles need to be inspected carefully before they are bought for installation. The manufacturer will grade the product, you must look out for this; you will find it next too the CE marking and the BS EN 12004 certification. These grading of tiles will help you determine if the tile type that you intend to buy is suitable for the kind of application you plan for it. Once you have checked for this and compared it to the PEI rating, you can be certain that your purchase has been successful and that you have the right kind of tiles.

Flooring For Your Kitchen

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

The kitchen can be a challenging area to provide flooring for.  On one hand, the kitchen flooring must be comfortable enough to stand on for long durations.  On the other hand, however, the flooring must keep out water and food to maintain its appearance.  The right kitchen flooring requires little maintenance and can keep up with the demands placed on it by a modern kitchen.  Spills and accidents will inevitably happen on a fairly frequent basis, demanding reliability and durability from flooring that is installed in the kitchen area.  To prevent serious maintenance problems and future expenses, it pays to install the right kind of flooring to begin with.

Wood flooring has traditionally been seen in kitchen flooring, but it can lead to high maintenance costs.  Wood aborbs moisture, causing severe maintenance issues.  When a wood floor absorbs too much moisture it can begin to bow up or down in the middle, leading to a surface that must be replaced or sanded down.  The only way to fix this problem is to sand it down, or to go the expensive route and replace the floor.  These options are both time consuming and costly, and involve many hours as well as thousands of dollars.  While a properly finished and maintained wood floor may resist these problems, wood flooring is definitely more likely to break down because of these problems.

Slate and ceramic tile are more reliable.  Tile and slate do not absorb moisture, and do not suffer from warping or cracking.  As fairly tough materials, they experience little expansion or contraction.
Slate and ceramic flooring can be found in a multitude of styles.  Slate and ceramic flooring are also very slip resistant, making them a better surface to use in the kitchen as well.  Hardwood flooring may be hazardous when wet, especially if it has been exposed to moisture.  When using slate as a kitchen surface, purchase a product with a low gloss to keep the safety of its great traction.

Laminate flooring is a great alternative to both wood and slate.  To achieve that hardwood look without all the associated upkeep problems, laminate flooring can be a great alternative.  Laminate flooring is easy to install, affordable, and very resistant to both water damage and stains.
Laminate flooring is also engineered to work under heavy loads and traffic.  The kitchen is a demanding place for flooring, and should be given flooring that will withstand as much.  Choosing the right kind of flooring will give homeowners lasting durability, with low maintenance requirements.

However, D-I-Y bathroom remodeling, much like remodelling a kitchen, will increase the value of the home and can be a relatively easy job if you don’t change the location. If you are planning radical changes to the existing layout, you’ll need to investigate whether or not you can build what you want without making structural changes.

D-I-Y bathroom remodeling can be one of the most expensive interior decorating projects in your home, or you can give your bathroom a fresh, new look without spending a lot. New faucets can update a bathroom with a small amount of time and effort. Before you start, clean your bathroom from top to bottom. Remodeling a bathroom can be expensive. The average cost of a full renovation of a bathroom when hiring a contractor is about the same as the cost of a small car. Remodeling a bathroom can be an easy or a difficult task, depending on the type of remodel you choose. The outcome of the remodeling project can enliven a house and totally change the look and feel of your home.

Another bonus when bathroom remodeling is that it gives you a chance to add energy efficient lighting, windows and even ventilation fans. Any home remodeling project that includes opening walls will provide the opportunity to improve your comfort and the energy efficiency of your home by adding insulation and air sealing materials. Remodeling a bathroom can be a complex and expensive job. Often people fail to recognize that there are options available that will help them save money over the course of their remodeling job and help reduce their remodel cost. Creating a new bathroom can be an adventure that produces tremendous results. It is often worthwhile for the homeowner to let a professional designer help you visualize the possibilities with the latest in computer aided graphics and build your confidence with their attention to detail and their willingness to listen to you and your concerns.

A bathroom renovation provides an opportunity to insulate and air seal this area when replacing the tub or shower enclosure and to install a low-flow shower head and faucets to conserve water. Additionally, a low-flow toilet model will consume only 1.6 gallons per flush compared to older models that use from 3.5 to 7 gallons per flush. A D-I-Y bathroom renovation covers a broad range of design options, materials, tools, repair procedures and installation techniques that can help you turn an ailing bathroom into an exceptional one.
